Aesthetics refers to the study of the relationship of music to the senses. It was derived from the word aesthesis (Gr) The term was coined in the 1700s by A.G. Baumgarten when he wished to establish a new field on the philosophical study of the arts.

Aesthetic education emphasizes the development of aesthetic potential. Education shapes behavior of humans capacity to respond to emotional and cognitive meaning in art.

Aesthetic education/experiences involves
-focus- highly directional, engergy flow, not elevator music
-perception- percepts help understand a concept
-Affective responses- reaction to experience causes physiological change
- Cognition- not just emotional, but has awareness, analysis, evaluation, etc.
- Cultural matrix

Objectives for aesthetic music education
1. Develop aesthetic sense leading to enrichment
2. Cultivate listening skills
3. Teache skills that allow stuednt to create and express through music
4. Provide medium in which student can share ast. experience with others
5. Notational literacy
6. Develop ability to discern good vs. bad in music
7. Learn about other cultures and values thru their music
8. Instill desire to continue musical learning
